How does the application process work for an ECHP? Identifying. The first step in the process of an Education Health and Care Plan is to identify that your child has additional learning needs. Assessing. Planning. Actioning the plan. Reviewing.
Read our struggling at school / college page for details. A diagnosis does not entitle you to an EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan), but it is possible to have an EHCP without a diagnosis. It is all about the impact of your child's difficulties, not the cause.
NB: The deadline from request assessment/LA becoming responsible to the LA finalising the EHCP is 20 weeks, subject to limited exceptions. If the LA decide not to issue a EHCP following assessment they must notify the parent or YP within a maximum of 16 weeks from the date of request/LA becoming responsible.
How long does the process take? From start to finish the process is 20 weeks. The initial stage where the local authority decides whether to carry out an assessment takes six weeks.
If more information is required, then it will be allocated to an EP who will complete their assessment and report within 6 weeks. On occasions an EP can attend a co-production meeting with the case officer, setting and family to support in writing outcomes and provision.
By 16 weeks: the Local Authority finish the assessment and decide if a plan is needed. Weeks 16 to 20: the Local Authority send a draft plan. The parent/ carer or the young person has 15 days to comment and to request a setting.
My experience is that getting an EHCP is straight forward so long as you have enough evidence. Collect all you can in terms of medical reports, school reports, observations, communication with school.
