Once you are on SDI, as long as you are still unable to work because of your disability your benefit payments will continue up until the "return to work" date your medical provider listed on your application. If your disability lasts past that date, you and your medical provider must ask to extend your benefit period.
Disability Insurance (DI) provides short-term wage replacement benefits to eligible California workers. The most you can receive is 52 weeks of DI benefits, for your own non-work-related illness, injury, or pregnancy. Your disability must also be certified by a physician/practitioner.
If you have not fully recovered by the “expected recovery date” provided by your doctor, you can request an extension to your benefits – assuming you are under the program's 52-week maximum benefit period (39 weeks for self-employed).
If your disability will extend beyond the original period established on your claim, have your physician/practitioner complete and submit the DE 2525XX. Your physician/practitioner can find and file this form online using SDI Online or you can provide them with a paper form.
If your benefits have not been exhausted after one year usually because you also have worker's compensation contribution, which EDD is matching, then you would be able to continue to receive the benefits. Otherwise, you have to apply for Social Security Disability benefits.
