FAQ

Your certificate of completion from your academy is valid for 2 years. I am a peace officer in another state. How can I become certified in Nevada?

The Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) was established by the Legislature in 1959 to set minimum selection and training standards for California law enforcement.

The Nevada Commission on POST is the regulatory agency that establishes and maintains the laws, regulations, and acts as the governing authority for the behavior, hiring, certification and training for law enforcement personnel in state.

More than 600 agencies participate in the POST Program and are eligible to receive the Commission's services and benefits which include: Job-related assessment tools. Research into improved officer selection standards. Management counseling services. The development of new training courses. Reimbursement for training.

"Category III peace officer" means a peace officer whose authority is limited to correctional services, including the superintendents and correctional officers of the Department of Corrections.

The training for Category I peace officers runs approximately 17 weeks and is offered twice a year. Training for category II/category III peace officers runs approximately 10 weeks and is offered twice a year.

Does the POE expire? The POE is only valid while a peace officer is actively employed by a law enforcement agency. It will expire once a peace officer becomes eligible for and is issued a Basic Certificate, OR the peace officer separates from employment without a valid Basic Certificate.

Being a U.S. citizen and having a four-year college degree or higher are the bare minimum requirements for officer school. Beyond that, the selection process is highly competitive across service branches.
