Transfer of a motor vehicle without a title may be easily accomplished with an Utah title bond. Utah defines a lost or defective title as "insufficient evidence of ownership". If the value of the motor vehicle exceeds one thousand dollars ($1,000.00) then a surety bond will likely be required.
If you no longer own the vehicle, such as you have sold the vehicle, unless you are transferring that tag to another vehicle you have purchased, then you must surrender the tag/plate and registration.
In Utah, you keep the plates; do not let new owner drive off with plates on the car.
Beginning January 1, 2025, all Utah license plates will be centrally distributed to vehicle registered owners. This means that all license plates will be mailed directly to the customer through the US Postal Service.
