Excuses for Avoiding Jury Service: “Undue Hardship” Entitled to an exemption because you served on a jury within the past year or two; A lactating mother; The primary caregiver of a child under 12, or someone with a serious mental or physical disability, if there is no reasonable alternative care available;

(a) A claimant or counterclaimant must file the jury demand at the time of filing the claim or counterclaim. (b) A person opposing a claim or counterclaim must file the jury demand not later than the filing of his answer or other pleading.

Failure to appear for jury service when summoned is a serious matter. You may be held in contempt of court which could result in a fine or other court-imposed penalty.

Excuses for Avoiding Jury Service: “Undue Hardship” Entitled to an exemption because you served on a jury within the past year or two; A lactating mother; The primary caregiver of a child under 12, or someone with a serious mental or physical disability, if there is no reasonable alternative care available;

The only way to be immune to jury duty is to not have a driver's license and not register to vote.

You should be prepared to provide documents to show why you need to be excused from jury duty. You may be excused for a "family situation" if you are the "primary caregiver of a person with a mental or physical disability, a person with a medically diagnosed behavior problem, or a child under age 12.

By law, the courts will excuse from jury duty anyone with a mental or physical condition that would keep them from serving as a juror. There is not an exemption based on age, but you may request to be excused if you have a hardship that would make it difficult to serve.

Jury questionnaires must be filled out completely and returned within 20 days of the postmark on questionnaire.
