IIRC the easiest way to do the quest is just to sneak into the house immediately to your left as you enter, steal the computer password from the end table left of the door, then go to the house at the end of the settlement, where you see the jail cells, and use the password on the computer.
They do die. I accidentally killed one during a supermutant attack at County Crossing a couple of days ago. You can't take them with you either. You can only assign them to a settlement. If you put a doghouse in the settlement they will hang around in or near it.
Wear the Silver Shroud costume when you confront the Mechanist in the Automatron DLC and when you go to Dry Rock Gulch in the Nuka-World DLC. You'll not regret it.
