If you find out your Social Security number has been stolen, or exposed in a data breach, the first thing to do is report it to the FTC. You can do that at IdentityTheft. The FTC will use the information you provide to create a personal recovery plan.
Identity Theft: If you think an identity thief is using your SSN to work or to collect benefits, call the Social Security Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271. If you think someone may be using your SSN to work, check your Social Security Personal Earnings and Benefit Statement.
As a general rule, any non-citizen with a valid Form I-766 Employment Authorization Document (EAD) is eligible for a Social Security number (SSN).
IV. VERIFICATION OF SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBERS A driver's license. Identification card issued by a federal, state, or local agency. Identification card issued by a medical insurance company or provider (including Medicare and Medicaid). Identification card issued by an employer or trade union.
When verifying a person's SSN, remember that: No valid SSN has all zeros in any of the 3 segments. For example, all of the following SSNs are invalid. No valid SSN has 9 identical digits or has the 9 digits running consecutively from 1-9. The client's SSN is not the same as their Recipient Identification Number (RIN)
