Mock trials are held in real court rooms, but not with real jurors. Most of the time, certified judges do hold the case, if they're available. But, jurors are usually experienced attorneys, for scoring reasons.
A mock jury is essentially a group of individuals who simulate the role of a jury in a legal setting. No legal background required – just bring your honest opinions! This process helps attorneys and legal professionals gauge potential reactions and perspectives before the actual trial.
Subsequent requests for deferrals must be in writing and mailed to the Office of Jury Management, 414 Grant Street, Suite 701-A, Pittsburgh, PA 15219, faxed to 412.350. 3043, or emailed to jurycoordinator@alleghenyCourts at least seven (7) business days prior to the scheduled service date.
Know your argument and your citations - cold. Read them again. When the judge starts to ask you a question, stop and listen to the question. Answer the question before continuing. Never try to fool or BS the judge. It is highly unlikely you can. Be courteous and polite. Remember too, we don't bite.
The more closely the mock jury trial can mirror the structure of the real trial, the more effective it will be. Draft a detailed outline of what the trial will look like, including opening statements, presentation of evidence, witness testimony, cross-examinations, closing arguments, and jury deliberation.
If you want to postpone your service to a later date or be excused, you must make a request in writing to the jury office of the courthouse to which you have been summoned.
Prospective jurors are put under oath when they are questioned (subjected to a void dire examination), so any prospective juror who lies could be prosecuted for perjury (a five-year felony in federal court).
Most contact between a federal court and a prospective juror will be through the U.S. mail, and any phone or email contact by real court officials will not include requests for any sensitive information. Jury duty is a vital civic responsibility and should be taken seriously by all citizens.
If you have additional questions, please contact the Office of Jury Management at 412-350-5336 from a.m. to p.m. Monday through Friday, or email your questions to jurycoordinator@alleghenycourts. Responses to email inquiries will be sent within 1-3 business days.
For example, write something like “My name is Jane Doe. On (date), I received a jury summons for (court date) at (court address) and was assigned the juror number (insert number here). I am writing to request to be excused from jury service because being absent from work would pose an extreme financial hardship.”
