Learning never stops in a legal career. A bar association offers access to opportunities to stay sharp through CLE programs, webinars, and other events. Bar associations often coordinate and host CLE programs on topics in the news or emerging issues.
Bar association activities build one's reputation in the legal community. They help foster contacts and relationships that can be not only fulfilling but also (if I can be so blunt) professionally useful. That, in many ways, is the point.
The bar is an actual physical partition that separates the courtroom. The public stays behind this railing or some other barrier; the area in front of the partition is restricted to participants in the trial or hearing. To be a lawyer is to be admitted to the non-public side of the partition.
Before they are allowed to practice law, lawyers must become members of their state's bar association. In order to become a member of the bar, applicants must pass a comprehensive exam.
