FAQ

The actual Muslim wedding is known as a nikah. Normally, the ceremony consists of reading from the Qur'an, and the exchange of vows in front of witnesses for both partners. Both parties must freely consent to the marriage. The bride's consent is especially emphasized and must be obtained without any coercion.

How do I fill this out? Gather personal information for both bride and groom. Fill in details about the marriage, including date and place. Provide information regarding the dowry and any special conditions. Include names and addresses of witnesses. Review the completed form for accuracy before submission.

Gather Your Witnesses: Don't forget! Pennsylvania law requires two witnesses over the age of 18 to be present at your ceremony and sign your marriage license.

You will receive your license at the end of your visit. It will be valid on the third day after you apply, and remain valid for 60 days from the issue date.

You will receive your license the day you apply for it, but there is a three-day waiting period before you can get married. The license is valid for 60 days from the date of issue and is only valid in the state of Pennsylvania.

To schedule your ceremony at City Hall you will need to call the Marriage License Department at (215) 686-2233 after you have obtained your marriage license (they won't disclose any scheduling details until you have this). When you call, you'll be asking when they are “opening the appointment book” for scheduling.

Marriage is permitted for a man with a chaste woman either Muslim or from the People of the Book (Arabic Ahl al Kitab, Jews, Sabians and Christians) but not to polytheists (or "idolaters": Yusuf Ali translation or "idolatresses": Pickthall translation). For women, marriage to People of the Book is not permissible.

You need a marriage license before you can legally get married. Both applicants must appear in person at the Register of Wills and provide the required documents, including identification. You can use your marriage license in any county in Pennsylvania. You cannot use it in another state or country.
