The Washington Declaration to not Operate any Motor Vehicle Without an Ignition Interlock Device is a legal declaration by the Washington State Department of Licensing, stating that all drivers convicted of a DUI in the state of Washington must have an Ignition Interlock Device installed in their vehicle. The Ignition Interlock Device (DID) is a breathalyzer system that requires a driver to blow into the device before starting the vehicle. If the driver’s breath test measures over the legal limit, the vehicle will not start. The Washington Declaration is part of the state’s DUI prevention program and is in place to protect the safety of the public by preventing those with a DUI conviction from operating a motor vehicle without and DID. There are two different types of Washington Declaration to not Operate any Motor Vehicle without an Ignition Interlock Device. The first is a Standard Declaration, which applies to all drivers who have been convicted of a DUI in Washington State. The second is an Enhanced Declaration, which applies to drivers who have been convicted of two or more Luis in a five-year period. The Enhanced Declaration requires additional restrictions, including a longer period of time with the DID installed, and the use of an additional interlock device.
