Overview of Tennessee Taxes Tennessee has no income tax on salaries and wages. And beginning with the 2021 tax year, the state repealed all taxes levied on income earned from interest and dividends.

Services such as grass cutting, trimming, bush trimming, leaf raking, and similar activities are all services performed on real property. Charges for such services are not subject to sales tax.

As with assets and liability items, items of income and expense are recorded in nominal ledger accounts ing to set rules. Expenses are always recorded as debit entries in expense accounts and income items are always recorded as credit entries in income accounts.

For example, in the 2020 tax year, if someone under 65 filing as a single taxpayer made at least $12,400, they had to file taxes. In 2021, for that same age and filing status, the income threshold was $12,550.

Tennessee does not have an individual income tax. Tennessee has a flat 6.50 percent corporate income tax rate and levies a gross receipts tax. Tennessee has a 7.00 percent state sales tax rate, a max local sales tax rate of 2.75 percent, and an average combined state and local sales tax rate of 9.55 percent.

Generally, you must include in gross income everything you receive in payment for personal services. In addition to wages, salaries, commissions, fees, and tips, this includes other forms of compensation such as fringe benefits and stock options.

Tennessee does not tax individual's earned income, so you are not required to file a Tennessee tax return. Since the Hall Tax in Tennessee has ended. Starting with Tax Year 2021 Tennessee will be among the states with no individual income.

Pay stubs, tax forms (1040 or W-2 from the last tax year), or any other proof of work and income should be returned with the renewal packet. If you send in pay stubs, send the last 8 weeks from the time you return the renewal packet to the state.
