South Carolina THEFT OF MAIL BY POSTAL EMPLOYEE is a crime that occurs when a United States Postal Service (USPS) worker steals items that are sent through the mail. This type of crime is taken very seriously and can result in serious penalties. There are two types of South Carolina THEFT OF MAIL BY POSTAL EMPLOYEE: 1) Grand Theft of Mail by Postal Employee and 2) Misdemeanor Theft of Mail by Postal Employee. Grand Theft of Mail by Postal Employee is a felony offense and carries a maximum penalty of up to 10 years in prison and/or a fine of up to $10,000. Misdemeanor Theft of Mail by Postal Employee is a lesser offense and carries a maximum penalty of up to 3 years in prison and/or a fine of up to $1,000. In both cases, the theft of mail must be intentional and the stolen item must have been sent through the mail.
