Notice - Alternate Service

Maryland Notice — Alternate Service is a legal notice used to provide notice to a defendant in a lawsuit that is filed in Maryland. This notice is used when the defendant cannot be served with process in the traditional manner, such as by handing it directly to them. In such cases, Maryland law requires the Plaintiff to use alternate service to provide the Defendant with notice of the lawsuit. There are two types of Maryland Notice — Alternate Service: (1) Service by Posting and (2) Service by Publication. Service by Posting involves affixing a copy of the Summons and Complaint to a designated location in the county where the lawsuit is pending. Service by Publication requires the Plaintiff to publish a notice in a designated newspaper in the county where the lawsuit is pending. In either case, the Plaintiff must also mail a copy of the Summons and Complaint to the Defendant's last known address.
