An Illinois Custody/Visitation Evaluation Referral Order is a court order from a judge that requires a family to participate in an evaluation to determine the best interests of the children in regard to custody and visitation. This evaluation is conducted by a neutral third-party, such as a mental health professional or family therapist. The evaluation can involve interviews with the parents, children, and other family members, as well as psychological testing. The evaluation results are used to make recommendations to the court on what type of custody/visitation arrangement is in the children’s best interests. There are two types of Illinois Custody/Visitation Evaluation Referral Order: a basic referral order and an extended referral order. A basic referral order requires the parents to participate in an evaluation and submit the evaluation results to the court. An extended referral order includes additional requirements, such as psychological testing and/or additional interviews with the family members.
