The Illinois Mandatory Insurance Affidavit (MIA) is a legally binding document that states that an individual or business has the minimum amount of insurance required by the state of Illinois. The document must be signed and presented to the Illinois Secretary of State or other authorized agency in order to receive a license or registration. The MIA is required for all motor vehicles registered in Illinois, including cars, trucks, motorcycles, and recreational vehicles. There are three types of Illinois Mandatory Insurance Affidavits: 1. The Private Passenger Vehicle Affidavit is required for all privately owned passenger vehicles that are registered in Illinois. It certifies that the holder has the minimum amounts of liability insurance, uninsured motorist coverage, and under insured motorist coverage as required by the state. 2. The Non-Ownership Vehicle Affidavit is required for any non-owned vehicles, such as rental cars, that are registered in Illinois. It certifies that the holder has the minimum amounts of liability insurance, uninsured motorist coverage, and under insured motorist coverage as required by the state. 3. The Commercial Vehicle Affidavit is required for all commercial vehicles that are registered in Illinois. It certifies that the holder has the minimum amounts of liability insurance, uninsured motorist coverage, and under insured motorist coverage as required by the state.
