The District of Columbia Petition for Probate — For Decedents Dying On Or After July 1, 1995, To The Present is a legal document used to initiate the probate process for those who have passed away on or after July 1, 1995. The Petition is used to establish the decedent's legal right to property, assets, and debts and to name the personal representative who will be responsible for distributing the assets. The Petition is filed with the D.C. Superior Court and requires certain information and documents, including the decedent's death certificate, inventory and appeasement of the estate, and all relevant documents and information related to the decedent's assets. There are two types of District of Columbia Petition for Probate — For Decedents Dying On Or After July 1, 1995, To The Present: Form DC-741, which is used for estates valued at less than $50,000, and Form DC-742, which is used for estates valued at more than $50,000.
