History of the Death Penalty The first execution in Colorado was the hanging of John Stoefel in 1859. The fundamental purpose of a voir dire is to determine the admissibility of disputed evidence separate from the merits of the trial. The separation from the trial permits and exploration and testing of the evidence without affecting the integrity of the trial process.

Often, jurors will be asked to state the neighborhood or area they live in, their profession, whether they have children, are married, and so on. This kind of information helps the judge and lawyers get a feel for the potential jurors, and might even inform an attorney's decision to use a challenge on someone.
