Alaska Second Independent Medical Evaluation (SOME) is an evaluation conducted by a health care provider to determine if an injured worker is medically stable and has reached Maximum Medical Improvement (MMI). This evaluation is required under the Alaska Workers' Compensation Act and is used to determine whether an injured worker is able to return to their pre-injury job or if they need further medical treatment. There are two types of Alaska Second Independent Medical Evaluation (SOME): the First Level SOME and the Second Level SOME. The First Level SOME involves a review of the injured worker’s medical records and a physical examination. The Second Level SOME is more comprehensive and involves a review of the medical records, a physical examination, and in some cases, a psychological evaluation.
