An all-terrain vehicle (ATV) is defined as a motorized off-highway vehicle designed to travel on four low-pressure or non-pneumatic tires, having a seat designed to be straddled by the operator and handlebars for steering control.
The exhaust pipes can be an easy differentiator as a two stroke requires an expansion chamber for the exhaust. A 4 stroke does not require this, although they may have a very small one, so the pipe will be straight to the muffler. If running, the sound is a dead give away.
A 2 stroke engine is one that completes the power cycle in just 2 strokes. The cycle begins with the piston at bottom dead center. There, the rotating crankshaft pushes a mixture of air and fuel into the cylinder. As the piston moves upward for the first half of the stroke, the mixture is compressed.
Can-Am and Polaris both also make 2 up models. Riding 2 up on a single seat ATV is done by people all day every day with or without the additional seat, but you are correct, it isn't very comfortable. The wheelbases just aren't long enough to give enough space to work with it.

Two riders, one smooth ride Ergonomic seating and handgrips offer a smooth ride for passengers. Plus, the Convertible Rack System turns the passenger seat into cargo space for solo rides.
A 2-stroke engine requires only one complete crankshaft revolution to complete the four stages of combustion. A 4-stroke engine requires two crankshaft revolutions. This advantage explains why a 250-cc 2-stroke engine makes more power than a 4-stroke of the same size.
The 2-Stroke cycle engine is more powerful than the 4-Stroke cycle engine, with more instantaneous delivery. It runs at higher rpm, and thus wears rapidly. The 4-Stroke cycle engine is more durable and has a longer life.
To register an ATV, you must provide proof of who you are. You must provide proof of identity, date of birth, and at least six points of proof of name. For the most recent listing of acceptable documents see Proofs of Identity For Registration and Title (PDF) (ID-82).
