The statewide sound level standards are 50 decibels during nighttime ( p.m. to a.m.) and 65 decibels during daytime, which applies to sources of noise specified in N.J.A.C.
Impulsive Sound - Between a.m. and p.m., impulsive sound shall not equal or exceed 80 decibels. Between p.m. and a.m., impulsive sound which occurs less than four times in any hour shall not equal or exceed 80 decibels.
§ 190-3. Noise prohibited. It shall be unlawful for any person to make, continue or use to be made or continued any loud, unnecessary or unusual noise or any noise which either annoys, disturbs, injures or endangers the comfo1t, repose, health, peace or safety of others within the limits of the Town of Hammonton.
Most local noise ordinances designate "quiet hours"—for example, from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. on weekdays and until 8 or 9 a.m. on weekends. So, running a power mower might be permitted at 10 a.m. on Saturday, but not at 7 a.m. Some universally disturbing sounds are commonly banned or restricted.

For residential environments, the accepted decibel level is lower. Any noise exceeding 70 dB is considered disturbing. Residential limits usually start at 60 or 55 dB (the equivalent noise of a regular vacuum cleaner). Time limits usually apply after 10 pm and until 7 am.

The Noise Control Act allows municipalities to adopt noise control ordinances that are more stringent than the State code. All municipal noise ordinances must be nearly identical with some exceptions, such as curfews, to the posted Model Local Noise Control Ordinance (Model) to be considered approved by the Department.
The Condo Act prohibits anyone from causing a noise nuisance, annoyance or disruption in a condo. Corporations often also have prohibitions against creating unwanted noise in their governing documents. There may be municipal by-laws regarding noise, depending on where you live.
