There is an alternate entrance located at the top of a canyon that you will find by walking from the location of Snow Veil Sanctum on the map towards Winterhold, but this entrance is barred by an iron gate as an exit to the ruins. The switch to open the aforementioned gate is on the inside.
To do this, you have to get your plate, hold it flat and facing you (close to the wall but not touching it, because if you do it will glitch inside of the gate and you can't get through), and then use Whirlwind Sprint into the plate and through the gate.
It cannot be entered without starting the quest (see Dungeon Lock Outs). The sanctum is a multilevel dungeon guarded by many Draugr, there are also a number of tripwire, bone chime and pressure plate based traps.
It is locked and inaccessible prior to the related quest Speaking With Silence, during which it is the hideout of Karliah, a supposed er and betrayer of the Thieves Guild.
Speaking With Silence is a quest available in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. It is offered by Mercer Frey immediately upon completion of "Scoundrel's Folly" in which the Dragonborn must accompany Mercer Frey, guildmaster of the Thieves Guild to Snow Veil Sanctum to find and confront Karliah.
It cannot be entered without starting the quest (see Dungeon Lock Outs). The sanctum is a multilevel dungeon guarded by many Draugr, there are also a number of tripwire, bone chime and pressure plate based traps.
You take a big breath in – expanding your lungs down and your abdomen out – and then you force all that air out on a “ha.” This exercise is built for projection. You are using all your air at once on one sound so you can force that sound out and be really loud with it.
