Bexar County is led by a County Judge and four Commissioners who are elected to four-year terms. They represent the Commissioners Court, which is the governing body of the County. Together, they have financial responsibility for the County, including adopting the budget and setting the property tax rate.

The original form was Bigerra and is said to mean "place of the beehives." "Béjar" could be an adaption from the Spanish word abeja, which means "bee." An older spelling of the city's name is Béxar.
