The draft is divided into three rounds in which each club has a selection, the order of which is determined by a combination of the teams' playoff and regular season positions, with the last placed team (or expansion teams) getting the first pick.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE? Unlike most North American sports, there is no “declaration” process for the MLS Superdraft. MLS compiles a list of draft- eligible players in consultation with MLS clubs, scouts, and college coaches. Most players on the draft list will be College seniors who have exhausted their college eligibility.
The draft process for the SuperDraft closely resembles the NFL Draft. Below is the process for the 2023 MLS SuperDraft: Any expansion club automatically gets the first pick; should there be two expansion teams, a coin toss determines who picks first in the SuperDraft and who picks first in the expansion draft.
Additionally, any former college player who departed college with remaining eligibility since the conclusion of the college season approximately one year prior to the MLS SuperDraft in order to compete as a professional in a league domestically is eligible to be drafted. Domestic leagues include USL, NISA and CPL.
Play Un-crowned pieces can only move diagonally forwards but can capture diagonally forwards AND backwards. A Queen moves by diagonally traversing any number of unoccupied squares. Capturing is compulsory and where there is a choice, the move that captures the greatest number of pieces must be made.
Players take turns to move a piece of their own colour. Any piece that reaches the far edge of the board is immediately crowned and is thereafter known as a "King". The act of crowning is a physical one - another piece of the same shade is placed on top of the piece in order to distinguish it from an ordinary piece.
