These teams build their rosters by signing players from within the U.S. and abroad, including Designated Players, as well as through the Expansion Draft—which allows them to select players from existing MLS teams to help form a competitive squad ahead of their inaugural season.
A more realistic pathway would be to get signed into one of the other professional leagues in America, such as the USL Championship, and impressing enough to catch the attention of an MLS team. Once you are a proven professional, an MLS team is more likely to take an interest in you.
The draft is divided into three rounds in which each club has a selection, the order of which is determined by a combination of the teams' playoff and regular season positions, with the last placed team (or expansion teams) getting the first pick.

Eligibility Rules Additionally, any former college player who departed college with remaining eligibility since the conclusion of the college season approximately one year prior to the MLS SuperDraft in order to compete as a professional in a league domestically is eligible to be drafted.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE? Unlike most North American sports, there is no “declaration” process for the MLS Superdraft. MLS compiles a list of draft- eligible players in consultation with MLS clubs, scouts, and college coaches. Most players on the draft list will be College seniors who have exhausted their college eligibility.
UEFA defines locally-trained or 'homegrown' players as those who, regardless of their nationality, have been trained by their club or by another club in the same national association for at least three years between the ages of 15 and 21.
Homegrown Player Signings A club may sign a player to a contract without subjecting him to the MLS SuperDraft if the player has been a member of that club's youth academy for at least one year and has met the necessary requirements. Players joining MLS through this mechanism are known as Homegrown Players.
