FAQ

You are considered contagious from two days before your symptoms begin until 10 days after your symptoms began. If you have no symptoms, you are considered contagious beginning two days before your test sample was collected and until 10 days after your test sample was collected.

After a positive test result, you may continue to test positive for some time. Some tests, especially NAAT tests, may continue to show a positive result for up to 90 days. Reinfections can occur within 90 days, which can make it hard to know if a positive test indicates a new infection.

In ance with guidance from the CDC, if you test positive for COVID-19 you should: Isolate for 5 days regardless of vaccination status. Only leave isolation after 5 days if you have no symptoms or your symptoms are improving, including at least 24 hours without a fever.

If you feel sick with cold, flu, or COVID-19 symptoms: Stay home away from others until you have not had a fever for 24 hours (without using fever-reducing medication) and other symptoms are improving. Wear a well-fitting mask around others while you feel sick. Get tested.

If you test positive, you are strongly encouraged to isolate (stay home and away from other people) for at least 5 full days, to prevent spreading the disease to others. Isolation is recommended even if you have been vaccinated or have had COVID-19 before.

Updated Guidance: The updated Respiratory Virus Guidance recommends that people stay home and away from others until at least 24 hours after both their symptoms are getting better overall, and they have not had a fever (and are not using fever-reducing medication).

Ending isolation: You can end isolation after 5 days if you test negative (use an antigen test) on Day 5 or later – as long as you do not have a fever and your symptoms are getting better. If you still test positive on or after Day 5 or if you don't test, isolate for 10 full days, and until you don't have a fever.

“A big study came out in the fall of 2023 which showed that most people are the most contagious on day four of symptoms with COVID and then it wanes from there,” said Dr. Roberts. While people become less contagious over time, they are still contagious with COVID for an average of eight days.

Consider staying away from people at high risk of getting very sick until: 10 days have passed since your symptoms started, 10 days have passed since you tested positive (if you never developed symptoms), or. You test negative for COVID-19 with an antigen test (such as an at-home test)
