Over the years, the MLB draft has ebbed and flowed with the number of rounds but in 2024 the MLB draft consists of 20 rounds. Teams are awarded their draft slot through a lottery unless the team made the playoffs in the previous year. If a team makes the playoffs, they are slotted into the draft based on their finish.
A standard Little League field has base paths of 60 feet, and a pitching distance of 46 feet (measured from the back point of home plate to the front edge of the pitcher's plate) .
The practice of players directly joining a major-league team has become increasingly rare since the MLB draft was instituted in 1965—it has only occurred nine times since 1980, and three times since 2000.

MYTH: LITTLE LEAGUE DOESN'T PLAY "REAL" BASEBALL Little League rules do not permit a runner to lead off until they are 13 years old (part of the Intermediate Division baseball program). If a runner doesn't lead off, then there are no balks and no pick-off moves for pitchers.

Starting with the 2025 season, children at the youngest level of the Little League® Baseball and Softball program (League Age 4-7) will have the ability to register for any Little League program they choose, without respect to any geography- or school-related eligibility requirements.
