Proof of ownership The DMV cannot register the car under your name without ownership documents. This can be either a title or a bill of sale. A title is a legal document that shows who owns the car and contains information such as the vehicle identification number (VIN), the make, model, year, and mileage of the car.
See Titles. If the vehicle is a 2010 model or older, you may be able to submit the duplicate title forms and a Bill of Sale (VP 104) to transfer ownership. We suggest the buyer and seller complete the transaction at a DMV office. A Bill of Sale by itself is not acceptable.
