Michigan's legal boundary was established in a 1836 Act prior to attaining statehood on January 26, 1837. Since statehood, eight challenges to the boundary have resulted in adjustments that relinquished territory to Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Ohio, but gained territory from Canada.

Indiana is bordered on the north by Michigan, on the east by Ohio, and on the west by Illinois, partially separated by the Wabash River. Lake Michigan borders Indiana on the northwest and the Ohio River separates Indiana from Kentucky on the south.

Property markers, monuments or stakes are metal rods usually placed at every corner of the property, including any angle or change of direction of the boundary line. The location of each marker is typically shown on the plat map by lot.

The Indiana-Michigan boundary was surveyed in 1827 by Eleazer P. Kendrick, with mile posts set along its entire 105 mile length. This was 11 years after the U. S. Congress approved the current border as part of the enabling legislation for Indiana's admission into the Union in 1816.
