Yes, a Zoning Use Permit is required for structures 12 feet or less in any dimension. This permit assures that the structure is located far enough from property lines and other buildings/structures. A building permit is required for anything measuring over 12 feet in any dimension.
Ing to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 546.09 square miles (1,414.4 km2), of which 523.61 square miles (1,356.1 km2) is land and 22.48 square miles (58.2 km2) (4.12%) is water.
Built-upon area is defined as both impervious and partially impervious cover including buildings, pavement, gravel, recreational facilities (tennis courts, etc.) but does not include wooden slatted decks and the water area of a swimming pool.
Mecklenburg County is the birthplace of several important North Carolinians. The 11th president, James K. Polk, was a native of Mecklenburg County and the world-renowned evangelist, Billy Graham, was born in Charlotte. Other notable entertainers from the area include Ric Flair, Anthony Hamilton, and Shannon Spake.

The Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners is the governing body of Mecklenburg County. The Board consists of nine commissioners - six representing districts and three elected at-large - that are elected in November of even-numbered years.
