Except as otherwise required or authorized by this chapter, the building line requirement for a lot restricted to single-family residential use shall be 25 feet along the front of a lot and ten feet along the back and sides of a lot adjacent to a collector street that is not an alley.
To get more specific, setbacks are measured from an owner's side, rear and front property lines. So how far is it? As an example, you may be required to build no closer than 15 feet from the front property line, 5 feet from the property lines on each side of the house, and 10 feet from the rear property line.
Side Setbacks (for Additions and New Construction) The City of Houston requires a minimum three-foot side setback for all properties, unless an easement or other agreement allows a smaller distance. On a corner lot, the building must be at least 10 feet from a “local” street on street-facing sides.
Under the National Building Code: The front yard must be at least 3 meters from the property line facing the street. The side yards, bordering neighboring properties, should have a minimum distance of 2 meters. The rear yard should also maintain a 2-meter setback.

But all three of these "Edge Cities" -- the Galleria, The Woodlands and Westchase -- have ultimately proved early critics wrong by exceeding expectations. And the development of all three depended, to varying degrees, upon the construction of Loop 610 and the Beltway as concentric transportation rings around the city.

Q: What are the closest cities to Houston? A: Galveston, The Woodlands, League City, Baytown, Katy, Tomball, Kingwood, and Conroe are some of the closest cities to Houston, each offering unique attractions and lifestyles.
If raising a family is the goal, then the suburban communities of The Woodlands, Kingwood, Sugar Land, Katy, Clear Lake, and Pearland are excellent. If proximity to work is the goal, then the best approach is to compare your work location with the neighborhoods or suburban communities closest to your workplace.
What to do: San Antonio is only a three-hour drive from Houston (OK, that's when there's no traffic), but it feels like a world away. There's no shortage of things to do, see and eat in San Antonio, but you'd certainly be remiss if you didn't spend some time on the Riverwalk in downtown San Antonio.
