As the United States expanded west, the native tribes were forced onto reservations, independent from, but still under, the federal government of the U.S. Presently, 22 groups are federally recognized as Native American or American Indian tribes in Arizona.
Where Are Reservations Located? The highest concentration of Native American reservations can be found in the western United States. California alone has 103 reservations that are recognized by the federal government.
Today, 22 American Indian communities preserve their cultures and traditions on land that accounts for one-quarter of Arizona.
