Normally, you will receive a “Notice of Monetary Determination” within three weeks from the date you file your claim for unemployment benefits.

To be found eligible for benefits, it is your responsibility to show that you quit for “good cause” as defined by the law. Good cause is shown if there was substantial harm by your staying on the job and if this harm could not be prevented or controlled.

The maximum weekly benefit amount (WBA) is $712, and the total maximum benefit amount (MBA) for the year is $18,512. Utah uses an earnings chart to calculate your payments. For example, if your highest wages during a quarter of your base period is $13,286, your weekly benefit amount is $505.

Able to Work/Available to Work You must be physically and mentally able to work full-time. If you are ill, injured, on a leave of absence or unable to work for any other reason, you may not be eligible for unemployment benefits for that period of time.

If you meet all the eligibility requirements and file your claim each week, you should receive your first payment about three weeks after you apply for unemployment benefits. Payments are not made on the same day each week.

You can close your claim by calling the Claims Center. You can also close your claim by not filing once you begin working. After three weeks of not filing claims, the system will close your claim. Note: You must reopen your claim to receive benefits if your claim is closed.

When you return to full-time work or want to stop requesting benefit payments for any reason, make your final request and then stop requesting. No notification is needed.
