11.13 Special Requirements for Drawings. (a) Drawings shall be executed in durable, black, sufficiently dense and dark, uniformly thick and well-defined, lines and strokes without colorings.
The traditional method of making patent drawings is with pen and ruler, usually in black and white. The basic tools are inexpensive, though drawing is fairly difficult because you must use India ink (a dark type of ink with carbon particles that is often used in architectural or technical drawings).
Size and Format Common sizes include 8.5″ x 11″ or A4 paper size, with a recommended margin of at least one inch on all sides. Digital drawings must meet the file format and resolution specifications provided by the patent office.
The projected publication date normally will be the later of: (1) eighteen months from the earliest filing date claimed; or (2) fourteen weeks from the mailing date of the filing receipt. The publication process takes about fourteen weeks.
A patent application often includes the following primary sections: Invention Title. The title's objective is to provide a clear understanding of the invention or idea. Prior Art: Context and Novelty. Invention Summary. Drawings and Descriptions. Detailed Description. Claims. Scope. Characteristics.

Utility patents show how a machine or process works. Most of these drawings are in standard black and white, although color examples are available. These color options are only accepted by the USPTO if they're better suited to illustrate the product.
