A common pleas court hears cases involving such matters as real estate, personal injury, breach of contract, marital conflicts and business relationships. This is also the court that hears all criminal felony cases, since municipal and county courts are limited to misdemeanor offenses.
Ohio's state courts are divided into three levels: trial courts, appellate courts and the state supreme court. Trial courts consist of municipal, county, and common pleas courts.
Common pleas judges are spread over four divisions: General, Domestic Relations, Juvenile, and Probate. The 34 General Division judges handle felony and civil lawsuits involving more than $15,000.
