If you apply online, fill out the application for a permanent resident travel document (IMM 5444) form in the permanent residence portal. You can apply on paper if you can't apply online and require accommodations, including for accessibility reasons.
ESTA applications may be submitted at any time prior to travel. The processing of an ESTA can take up to 72 hours. It is also advisable to check the status of an already approved ESTA in advance of traveling to make sure that it is still valid.

Canadian permanent residents may need a non-immigrant visa to enter the United States. You must obtain this visa from the U.S. authorities before entering the country. You must also have a valid passport from your country of citizenship.
Lawful permanent residents must continue to present a valid Permanent Resident Card. A passport is not required.
