SAN ANTONIO (June 22, 2023) – Today, the San Antonio City Council unanimously voted to double the City's homestead exemption to 20 percent. The City is also poised to propose lowering its property tax rate as part of the Fiscal Year 2024 Proposed Budget.

Persons with a residence homestead are entitled to a 20% exemption of the market valuation of their home.

Homestead exemption requires the applicant to own the home. Ownership means the owner of record or surviving spouse, a joint tenant or tenant in common or surviving spouse, a vendee in possession under a land contract, or the beneficiary of a trust if certain conditions are met.

Veterans in Texas may qualify for a property tax exemption depending on their disability rating. Veterans with a 100% disability rating are fully exempt from property taxes. 70-99% may receive a $12,000 exemption from their property's taxable value. 50%-69% may receive a $10,000 reduction from the property's value.

Governor in 2015 the Homestead Exemption was $15,000 and, today, the exemption is $100,000, and $110,000 for seniors. In 2023, the $100,000 Homestead Exemption was permanently codified into the Texas Constitution when voters passed Proposition 4 with 83% of voters in support.
