JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – After the 2024 passage of Senate Bill 756, Missouri seniors may be eligible for a property tax credit to reduce their property tax liability. To qualify for the tax credit, applicants must meet the following criteria: Be a Missouri resident. Be 62 years of age or older.

The program now allows those taxpayers who are 62 years of age or older to receive a credit on future years tax bills that essentially freezes their property taxes on their primary residence to the tax bill amount from the year of application/eligibility.

In order to obtain exemption, the owner must present substantial and persuasive evidence demonstrating the property meets the requirements of Article X, Section 6 of the Missouri Constitution and Section 137.100 of the Missouri Revised Statutes.

The Department of Revenue has launched the application for the Senior Property Tax Freeze Program. The application deadline is June 30, 2025. A quick, convenient, online application portal is available now.

Applicants must mail the application to the Department of Revenue (DOR) by September 30 of each year. By December 15th the DOR certifies to collectors those applicants who meet requirements of the homestead exemption credit.
