FAQ

What if I miss the filing deadline? A late application for a residence homestead exemption, including for a person age 65 or older or disabled, may be filed up to two years after the filing deadline has passed.

Exemption applications must be filed with your local assessor's office. See our Municipal Profiles for your local assessor's mailing address. Do not file any exemption applications with the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance or with the Office of Real Property Tax Services.

The Commissioners Court also approved a 20 percent homestead exemption for the Tarrant County Hospital District, bringing more tax relief to homeowners. A taxing entity must decide before July 1 whether to offer an exemption and at what percentage. The savings would be reflected on next year's property tax bill.

Check the Status of Your Application We strive to process exemptions as quickly as possible, but at times processing could take up to 90 days to process, per Texas Property Tax Code Section 11.45. Please allow at least 90 days to lapse before contacting our office to check when your application will be processed.

Texas offers several types of Homestead Exemptions: Standard Homestead Exemption: Provides a $100,000 reduction in the appraised value for school district taxes. For example, a home appraised at $300,000 would have its taxable value reduced to $200,000, saving homeowners hundreds of dollars annually.

A homestead exemption also limits the increase of your appraised value to 10% annually. This limitation is commonly referred to as a "homestead cap". A homestead cap may exceed the 10% increase if additional improvements, land, or extensive renovations are added to your residence homestead.
