16 and 17-year-olds You'll only be able to work for eight hours every day, or a total of 40 hours over the course of a week. You can't usually work an overnight shift, but there are some exceptional circumstances where you can.

Minors Age 16 and 17 — When school is in session, 16- and 17-year-olds may work up to 28 hours a week, 4 hours a day on school days, and 8 hours a day on non-school days.

16-year-old children cannot work more than 10 hours consecutive or more than 10 hours in a 24 hours period. 7 p.m. (9 p.m. before non-school day) to 6 a.m. 8-48 school day-week: 4-48 d except 8 before non-school day.

Important to note is that on school weeks, minors ages 16 to 17 may work up to 8 hours on Saturday and / or Sunday. However, the hours per week requirement still applies. Minors ages 16 to 17 may also work until 12am during the school week on nights when school is NOT in session the next day.

Minors are also not allowed to work before 7 a.m. or after 7 p.m., except between June 1 and Labor Day when the evening hour is extended to 9 p.m. This age group cannot work during school hours. No federal laws restrict how many hours 16- to 18-year-olds can work.

There is no days per week restriction. 16 and 17-year-old minors enrolled in school may not work for more than nine hours in any one day, 40 hours in a school week, 48 hours in a non-school week, and six days in any one week.

Employees who are 16-17 years old can work six, four-hour days during a school week, with a maximum of 20 hours in the week. For non-school weeks, these minors can work six, eight-hour work days a week, with a maximum of 48 hours worked per week.

An employer can contact the director-general if they want you to work more than 10 hours a week (such as in school holidays). There is no limit on the number of hours you can work if you are aged 15 – 17, so long as the work does not interfere with your education.

What hours can you work: Young people can't work more than eight hours a day or more than 40 hours a week. Unlike adults, there is no opt out for this. If you work for two different employers on the same day, you still can't work more than a total of eight hours.
