Saudi Arabia has a two-tiered minimum wage system: Saudi Nationals in the Private Sector: The minimum monthly wage is 4,000 Saudi Riyals (SAR), effective as of 2024. This increase aims to encourage Saudis to participate in the workforce. Expatriates in the Private Sector: There is currently no mandated minimum wage.
National Labor Relations Act. In 1935, Congress passed the National Labor Relations Act (“NLRA”), making clear that it is the policy of the United States to encourage collective bargaining by protecting workers' full freedom of association.
(i) Any person aged between 18 and 60 years, physically fit and possessing professional and academic qualifications required by the Kingdom (provided there is a shortage of citizens holding such qualifications), or belonging to those category of workers needed by the Kingdom, may be employed in Saudi Arabia.
New labour law in Saudi Arabia requires non-Saudi workers to have a written work contract with a fixed term. An employer cannot employ non-Saudis for a role other than specified in their work permit. Foreigners cannot change their profession without taking the necessary legal measures.
The 2024 updates to the Saudi Labour Law introduce several significant changes for expatriate workers: Employers must have the approval of the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development to hire expatriates. Expatriate employees must have valid work permits and residency visas (Iqama).
These include right to work of one's choice, right against discrimination, prohibition of child labour, just and humane conditions of work, social security, protection of wages, redress of grievances, right to organize and form trade unions, collective bargaining and participation in management.
Working hours/Weekly Holiday/Overtime allowance: (i); Working hours are 8 hours daily and 48 hours per week. During the month of Ramadan, the working hours are reduced to six hours a day and 36 hours a week, for Muslim workers. (ii); Overtime rates are 150% of the hourly wage.
The law says you are protected when you: Speak up about wages that are owed to you • Report an injury or a health and safety hazard • File a claim or complaint with a state agency • Join together with other workers to ask for changes.
