Ingly, effective July 1, 2024, all professional land surveyors in North Carolina must make reasonable efforts to notify adjoining landowners upon whose land it is necessary to enter in order to perform any surveys. The right of entry law does not define what “reasonable efforts” mean.

In order to safeguard life, health, and property, and to promote the public welfare, the practice of engineering and the practice of land surveying in this State are hereby declared to be subject to regulation in the public interest.

In North Carolina, it is not required for a purchaser of real property to obtain a survey. In fact, most people believe that there are only a few reasons why they should consider having a survey of their property. These reasons include resolving boundary disputes with their neighbor or when building a new home.

In North Carolina, survey maps are recorded at the county level. The Wake County Register of Deeds property lookup system can provide a copy of a property survey. Most often property (or lots) in subdivisions is typically shown on a recorded map of the overall subdivision.

Is a Survey Required in North Carolina? No. Technically, there is no legal requirement to get a new survey for any transaction, mortgage, or project. There is also no legal requirement to get an ALTA/NSPS survey in North Carolina when you do decide to have your property evaluated.

Complete a traineeship. A traineeship working under a licensed surveyor will give you the experience you need to obtain your full surveying license. Your traineeship should last for at least four years, depending on your state's requirements.
