City Council Votes To Establish Los Angeles As A 'Sanctuary City' Today, the Los Angeles City Council unanimously voted to establish the City of Los Angeles as a “Sanctuary City” and prohibit any City resources, including property or personnel, from being utilized for any immigration enforcement.
The city is also home to many high-technology companies, earning it the nickname “Silicon Island.” Alameda was among the first communities in California to choose the council-manager form of government, which was adopted later by most California cities. The College of Alameda opened in 1970.
