FAQ

Elder abuse is the mistreatment, neglect or exploitation of an older adult or vulnerable person. The abuse typically occurs at home or at a residential facility, at the hands of a caregiver or family member.

Categorical Vulnerable Adult: A resident of a licensed facility, or receiving licensed state services AND/OR • Functional Vulnerable Adult: Regardless of residence possesses a physical or mental infirmity or other physical, mental, or emotional dysfunction which impairs the individual's ability to provide food, ...

To qualify financially, an elder must have limited assets or a low monthly income. Assets can be no greater than $3,000 or the elder's income must be less than $1,234 a month.

Applicants also need to qualify based on age and income: All applicants need to be at least 65 years old, or disabled. Applicants must be citizens of the US and residents of Minnesota.

With assisted living, staff have the right to deny admission if the care needed exceeds what the facility can offer. If a senior could jeopardize the safety and health of other residents, the senior may be denied admission to an assisted living facility.

Additionally, assisted living may not be a good choice for people with significant mobility constraints or in need of memory care unless the facility specifically caters to these needs. Lastly, it is important to know if you or your loved one may be in need of memory care.

Asset Definition & Exceptions Medicaid also considers many assets to be exempt (non-countable). Exemptions include personal belongings, household furnishings, an automobile, and generally one's primary home.
