Qualifying seniors receive deductions off their tax bills because they are senior citizens. The senior citizen exemption reduces the tax bill by a sum certain each year. The actual deduction is $5,000 times the local tax rate. So, if the local tax rate is 6%, the senior citizen exemption will be $300.
For persons age 65 or older or disabled, Tax Code Section 11.13(c) requires school districts to provide an additional $10,000 residence homestead exemption. Tax Code Section 11.13(d) allows any taxing unit to adopt a local option residence homestead exemption. This local option exemption cannot be less than $3,000.

You can use Texas Comptroller Form 50-114 to apply for the General Homestead Exemption. If you turn 65 or become newly disabled, you need to submit new application to obtain the extra exemption. These exemptions use the same Form 50-114 along with Supplemental Affidavit Form 50-144-A.
An individual is entitled to defer collection of a tax on their homestead property if they are 65 years of age or older or disabled (as defined by Section 11.13(m) of the Texas Property Tax Code). The individual must own the property and occupy the property as a residence homestead.

Residence Homestead of 100% or totally Disabled Veterans: House Bill 3613 of 81st Texas Legislature authorized the creation of Section 11.131 of the Texas Property Tax Code. This newly created Section entitles a 100% exemption for a residence homestead of a qualifying Disabled Veteran.
