In middle and high schools, a student may fail or lose credit if unlawful absences exceed 5 days in a term, 10 days in a semester or 20 days in a school year. A note from a doctor, dentist, court official or counselor may be required for all absences beyond 10 days.
How Often Can Your Child Be Absent From School? Students are considered chronically absent if they miss 10% of the school year for excused or unexcused reasons, which typically equates to an average of two absences a month, experts say.
Too many absences are serious not only for students, but also for parents, too. Schools handle minor truancy with warning letters, parent-teacher conferences and other means. However, in some states, parents can be fined when their kids miss too much school. Chronic absenteeism affects millions of students nationwide.
Poor attendance can account for up to a quater of the math achievement gap between poor and non-poor students. The average American student misses two weeks of school each year.
Virginia Law requires a child to attend school all day every day until the age of 18 or until the completion of an approved program. Five days of unexcused absences is considered a truancy problem.
After five full days of unexcused absences, an attendance plan, documenting the reasons for absences, and potential supports, will be completed. Parents can monitor their students' attendance records by logging into their assigned SIS ParentVUE account.
Tardiness is a serious detriment to each child's and each classroom's success. When a child is tardy, it prevents him/her from the benefits of an important part of a school day when the day's work is outlined. "Excessive tardiness" is when a child is late in excess of 30 minutes.
When a student has received five unexcused absences, the school principal or designee shall make a reasonable effort to ensure that direct contact is made with the parent. The parent shall be contacted in a face-to-face conference, by telephone, or through the use of other communication devices.
Colleges will not really care about a single tardy… Your freshman year of all years. Also, if you're the kind of person who cares that deeply about a single tardy affecting your chances of getting into a good college, chances are you don't have a lot to worry about anyway.
