John 17 records the prayer of Jesus, immediately before His suffering. This prayer is divided into three parts in your Bible: First, Jesus prays for Himself (-5). Second, Jesus prays for His disciples (-19). Third, Jesus prays for all believers (-26).
Jesus intercedes from “the right hand of God” (Romans ). The Holy Spirit intercedes from within our hearts (cf. 1 Corinthians ). To summarize the differences in a concise way, we might put it like this: Jesus intercedes for us; the Spirit intercedes within us.
Pleading is biblical Jeremiah cries out to the Lord, “Righteous are you, O Lord, when I complain to you; yet I would plead my case before you” (Jeremiah ). Joshua pleads the case of the Israelites and the disgrace their annihilation would bring upon the name of God (Joshua -9); and God responds with His grace.
To prepare for the return, Daniel “pleaded with God in prayer and petition, in fasting, and in sackcloth and ashes” (Daniel ). At the time, praying this way was common in difficult situations (see Esther –3; Jonah –9).
“Catholics shouldn't ask Mary and the saints for intercession. Scripture says, 'For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus' (1 Tim. ).” Christ has a unique role as mediator, but this does not mean that he alone intercedes with God.
Put Him in Remembrance It means that as a covenant believer, you can stand before the throne of God when you pray and remind Him of His promises. You can lay your case legally before Him and plead your case as a lawyer would plead his case before a judge.
Romans says that Jesus “is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.” In 1 John we read that Jesus is our “advocate with the Father,” and from Hebrews we learn that Jesus “always lives to intercede” for us. What this intercession looks like is depicted in our reading for today.
BIBLE TEXT: 7 Hear me as I pray, O Lord. Be merciful and answer me! My heart has heard you say, “Come and talk with me.” And my heart responds, “Lord, I am coming.” Do not turn your back on me.
Simply put a plea is in regard to a urgent emotional situation, a prayer is in regard to as God to act in someones' behalf, becasue they have sought out to do God's will and are having oppsition to doing it.
