Suffolk, Virginia Suffolk's rich history dates back to 1608 when the English settled here and traded with the Nansemond Indians. Burned by the British in 1779 and damaged by other fires throughout the next century, Suffolk survived to become a city in 1910.
Today, Suffolk remains a major peanut processing center and transportation hub.
By 1941, Suffolk had been declared "The Peanut Capital of the World". The city also became home to Planters' Mr. Peanut, a world-famous advertising icon (voted the country's third-most popular in 2004).
