The city is also home to many high-technology companies, earning it the nickname “Silicon Island.” Alameda was among the first communities in California to choose the council-manager form of government, which was adopted later by most California cities. The College of Alameda opened in 1970.

Alameda was incorporated in 1854 and became a charter city in 1916 with a Council-Manager form of government with approximately 500 full-time employees. The five-member Mayor/Council serves four-year terms, staggered at even-numbered years.
