FAQ

No. The Civil Air Patrol is not part of the U.S. military armed forces. Instead, the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) is an all-volunteer civilian non-profit organization that is focused on three missions: emergency services, aerospace education and our cadet programs.

The Civil Air Patrol is a federally chartered non-profit corporation that is also the Air Force auxiliary. CAP's mission is supporting America's communities with emergency response, diverse aviation and ground services, youth development and promotion of air, space and cyber power through aerospace education.

You cannot be deployed, called to active duty, or forced to serve in any branch of the US Armed Services in any way. CAP members are not eligible to receive any Veterans Administration Benefits for their volunteer service to Civil Air Patrol.

While it is customary for CAP members to salute each other and to salute military members, keep in mind that military members do not have to salute CAP members, regardless of grade.

How old do I have to be to join? Youth members must be at least 12 years old and not yet 19 years old. Special school squadrons accept cadets under the age of 12 as long as they are in the sixth grade. You'll know it's a school squadron because the units have 800 series charter numbers.

CAP National Headquarters is located at Maxwell Air Force Base outside Montgomery, Alabama. The headquarters employs a professional staff of over 100 and is led by the CAP executive director (analogous to a corporate chief operating officer), who reports to the board of governors.

You will only have access to the base when participating in CAP events. If your unit meets on a military installation, you will coordinate with the unit to gain access to the base.
